I saw this post over at The Kitchens Garden about posting a picture of your work space, the place you write. In a very real sense, this is where I write...
That is where my brain works the best anyway. If I had ever managed to actually write down even a fraction of the stuff I "write" out in the woods, it would fill volumes. The little trickle that does manage to get transcribed into real words happens here...
This space is in dire need of a change though. The desk was built a million years ago by an ex boyfriend who put it together in a high school shop class. Yes, it is that old. I am not sure how I inherited the thing when we split up years and years ago, but here it is.
It has served its purpose, but it has always been just a bit 'off'. It is a couple of inches too tall for comfort, it has a shelf underneath that I whack my knees into on a daily basis and it is cramped. It is one of those things that I "make do" with because it is there and has never become enough of a priority to change, but it is bugging me more and more lately. Time for something different that suits me better. I just have to figure out what that is.
This corner if full of old clutter. Old papers fill the drawers. Old equipment lies unused. An old desk filled with unwanted memories. In fact, the more I sit here writing about it the more I want to throw it all away.
Would anybody like a slightly "off" computer desk? You can even keep the dust:)
I'm laughing that you think that space is cluttered. Mine would horrify you. :)
ReplyDeleteI came over from Celi's... love your thinking space, and I can well see that an uncomfortable writing space spoils the magic a bit. Even a kitchen table would be better; at least you wouldn't bash your knees...
ReplyDeleteIt looks great to me, specially that cushion on the chair - or does that belong to the canine I spy in the corner of the picture?
ReplyDeleteThat cushion is mine, but Connor has several of his own:)
DeleteSounds like this has been a very therapeutic exercise for you. I hope it leads you to what you would really like :)

ReplyDeleteWonder if you will get any takers for your old desk... ;-)
ReplyDeleteWhat a lovely project ahead for you creating a new wonderful space.
Have a happy day.

My father built a desk, that I now own, from plywood. It is just a sheet of plywood, probably almost six feet long, maybe 30 inches deep. It has two legs on one side, one front, one back and the other side has a wooden file cabinet holding it up. Dual purpose! He laminated formica onto the top and edged it with oak. He also built a drawer for it. Lots of desk space here! Seems to me, with all your power tools and know-how, you could whip something similar up!
ReplyDeleteClutter? You are definately a "piker" when it comes to clutter. I put a door over two "two drawer" filing cabinets and I now have a huge area upon which to pile clutter.
ReplyDeleteIt happened to be in a relatively clean phase at the moment. It does not always look so organized, which tends to come and go depending on the level of daily chaos.
DeleteYou painted a good story with two pictures! You do need a writing space that matches the inspiration of your thinking space. Fun post.
ReplyDeleteAbsolutely love where you "write" it's my kinda space!! I am the best version of myself in the woods, wish I could live in that space more often. My first reaction to your inside desk area was, that is so clean and organized! The larger the desk, the more unused junk a person can keep on it. Can you just remove the knee-knocking shelf? I am thinking about switching to an adjustable desk, altho I've heard they are pricy.
ReplyDeleteI have though about an adjustable desk, but they are expensive. You might check out this one though, much better price:

Thanks, I'll check it out. I used to need my huge wrap around desk when I ran my home biz back in the day. For fax machines, answering machines, copiers etc Now it's just good for piles of unused crap and outdated equipment...would be so refreshing to have clear space & seating/standing options. Yep, I'm a dreamer.
DeleteI like your thinking spaces and the tree on the wall really appeals to me, Is it your own work?
ReplyDeleteThe copper tree was made by some friends of mine. They create copper artwork, although they no longer make the trees. Their website can be found here: http://www.studioyates.com/
DeleteThe photograph on the other wall is mine: http://thedancingdonkey.blogspot.com/2013/06/a-dancer-in-woods.html
So interesting to see your 'inside space'!! I'm a fan of what gets written there. Love your tree art - especially the one to your right. Lovely.
ReplyDeleteYour thinking space is beautiful and your writing space is warm and cozy.
ReplyDeleteIt's not big enough for Conor to sleep under :-)
