Bad News

My dog is sick.  Actually, he is dying.  He was fine last week, but started not wanting to eat and following me too closely on our walks.  Yesterday, we went to the vet.  Tanner was very well behaved, which scared the crap out of me.  Tanner hates the vet.  The blood-work came back unequivocally bad.  He is in full renal failure.  He is getting medicine and fluids.  They are not helping.  He has gone from seemingly completely healthy to dying before my eyes in a matter of hours.  He will be gone soon and will take half my soul with him.

  1. It came to me that every time I lose a dog they take a piece of my heart with them. And every new dog who comes into my life, gifts me with a piece of their heart. If I live long enough, all the components of my heart will be dog, and I will become as generous and loving as they are.

  6. I am so so sorry. My old dog Molly died exactly that way. It was especially hard to lose her when she had seemed so healthy so short a time before. I have to take my present dog to the vet tomorrow to be put to sleep. Due to diabetes, he has no circulation in one of his back legs, as well as blindness and other problems. I shall miss him terribly. You have my heartfelt condolences.

  10. So very sorry about this. As i was told our pets have sense of just the here and now so they do not grieve or fear death. But we are left behind with our broken hearts and memories and grief that slowly overtime lifts. May Tanner's journey be painless and sending hugs to you for this painful process. take care.

Please know you have many friends on your blog who wish we could come over and hug you and make things better. I love your dog and my heart hurts for you and for Tanner. I know he loves you and you love him. Be with him and let him make the decision when to cross over and as his loving caretaker, help him through if he is in pain.

  20. i HATE saying goodbye to my canine family members but it's part of the unwritten contract that we sign up to when we include them in our lives.
Try n remember the good times. I know it's a cliche, but maybe it'll help. xx

  24. Oh no! I am so very sorry that your boy Tanner has become so suddenly and inexplicably ill. Dogs do not live nearly long enough. I think if they lived as long as donkeys that we would never recover from their loss.
Hugs and prayers for some peace in your heart in the days to come. Hopefully the vet can at least tell you what happened??

  28. Oh Kris, I'm so sorry. I have a Border Collie mix who could be Tanner's first cousin; he's about 11 or 12 now, and I dread this day. I'm sure he's headed to Rainbow Bridge and will be waiting for you. It's always a privilege to have them in your life. God bless, Suzanne in Ohio

  32. I'm so sorry for you. I lost my heart dog to sudden kidney failure too so I know how you are feeling. Even before that time I remember looking at her beloved greying face and feeling a huge wave of rebellion, that I would fight the world to keep her with me, but we just can't do it. All we can do is give them a good end as our final loving act for them. xxx
