One of the perils of working nights for the past 15 years is that my sense of when one day becomes the next day gets a bit skewed. From my point of view, it is still Wednesday, which is Elva's (aka, Farm Buddy, aka, The Little Elf) birthday. Since the Little Elf clamors for pictures of her beloved puppies several times a day, that is what she gets for her B-day:
Three generations, baby Purple - 7 weeks, Connor - 3 years, Scout - 15.5 years.

Happy Donkey Day
May 8th is World Donkey Day, have you hugged a donkey today? If not, you can send virtual hugs to Ben, which is actually what he prefers unless you are on his super, super short list of people (well, one person to be accurate) allowed to hug him. If you are not on that list, you may find that he tip-toes off to hide in the barn if he feels in danger of any unsanctioned hugging. Virtual hugs are tolerated.
If you are in need of a real donkey hug to celebrate World Donkey Day, then it is always best to turn to Ramsey, the Official Donkey Ambassador. Hedemands accepts hugs from everyone who visits, whether you want one or not.
And for those who like a bit of a challenge with a sweet, cuddly reward at the end, you can spend some time convincing Emma that you are huggable. Don't expect an easy conquest, but patience and kindness will be well rewarded.
And for the donkeys themselves....they are happy that World Donkey Day coincided with brush-clearing day.

Spring Break
I've been on vacation from work and I had thought I'd finally get caught up on a bunch of blog posts cluttering up my brain, instead, I've barely looked at the computer all week. Which felt good. It is Spring, my favorite time of year and I needed time away from "civilization".
I didn't have any real plans for my staycation, but I have mostly done just that - stayed home and tackled random outdoor projects. I will try to get caught up since I know I will have to rejoin the world soon, much as I would like to avoid it. I have another week of freedom so maybe I can still catch up and be ready to head once more unto the breach by the end of it.
The weather has been rather crazy. Last Monday, I woke up to this...
A day and a half later, on Wednesday, it was 85 degrees and I had to take all the windows out of the barn so my still winter-furry donkeys didn't drop from heat exhaustion.
Given the sudden heat, I decided to try out a Christmas present from Elva...
She brought me (or rather Connor) a smallish crate to mount on the ATV so I could take him to some of our favorite hiking areas that are too far and dangerous to walk to and have become impassable by car. I made some changes to the above setup and finally managed to move the tool box to the front and put the crate on the back. It is not a roomy ride for Connor, but it is secure and safe from the mean dogs we have to pass. It is only a 10 minute ride so it works.
It may not be a first-class sized seat, but the trip is worth it.
I will try to be a better blogger and I will tell you all about my Tessa/mule baby thoughts soon. As soon as I get them straightened out enough to write down and actually make a decision.

New Roommates
The puppies have a couple of new roommates....
They're already dressing alike and sharing each others clothes....
(Elva is paranoid about collars, but we want to be able to tell them apart so they got crayons instead)
The puppies are happy about the new additions.
Generally, they are just plain happy.
And tired. Tired puppies are good puppies.
In addition to their new Guard Dog duties, which they take terribly seriously, they have also been going on hikes with Elva several times each day and attempting to keep the Border Collies in line.
They love playing in the pond and a few of them have learned that, when they fall in, they can swim.
All this hard work is tiring.
It's just not easy being an alert guard dog.
Good thing they all have a lot of help.
Including a couple new additions to the pack.

Home Sweet Home
"Hey Ben, how'd you end up on that side of the fence?"
"Ummm, I'm not sure mom, but it was ages and ages ago and I don't think I want to be over here anymore....Have I missed breakfast? I'd like breakfast. And my barn. And lunch. And a nap."
"What, you don't want to be a wild donkey, roaming the countryside, fending for yourself, making all your own choices? You're gonna have to come around the stone wall to get back in."
"OK, I'm on my way, wait for me! Room service, here I come....
"Is this the spot?"
"No? Well, don't leave without me, I'll get there and I still want breakfast!"
"Whew! Good thing Ma found me. Half an hour on the wildside was enough for me."
