Can you beleive it?

I am not good at keeping track of birthdays.  And things like anniversaries - forget it.  Literally.  I have been known to forget my own birthday and I recently went a whole year telling people I was a year older then I actually am until I stopped to think and did the math over.  Embarrassing, but not so bad, I got to turn 41 twice after all.  There is one birthday though that I am not likely to forget.

Can you believe it?  It has been one year today since this little brown pipsqueak finally made a long overdue appearance for my painfully underage Emma.

It was almost exactly 4 months later that I took Ramsey to Cornell and I was trying to find it in me to say goodbye forever.  I am so immensely grateful that I didn't have to.

I am grateful to the good vets who saved Ramsey's life....

to my beautiful, sweet Emma, the very best mother, who will herself be celebrating her third birthday 4 weeks from now....

to all of the good people who read this blog, who care and who have contributed so much in so many ways.

And I am very, very grateful for the bewildering, daunting and often overwhelming odyssey that having donkeys in my life has been.  I would not have missed a day of this incredible journey, not even the bad days (and Lord, but we have we had a few of those).  I have learned so much, gained so much and the sharing of it has brought even more.  More than I could ever have imagined.

Happy Birthday my beautiful donkey-boy.  Here's hoping for many, many more.

And hey, don't go yet, we have to have a present right?  Leave a birthday wish sometime today, July 1st, and Ramsey will pick a lucky winner who will get to try some of my very special Wild-Blueberry/Rhubarb jam.  Even people who don't like blueberries or rhubarb like this stuff!

  4. Happy birthday to the littlest survivor.
Answering your question about what happened to the grass in Southern New Mexico: The whole area moved from a wet cycle to a dry cycle, starting maybe in the 1930's. I know that by the early l940's I saw the corrals sitting in the open country that used to protect the stacked hay from cows, etc.

The Mimbres river used to be a running river, but I only saw water in it once, right after a heavy rain.

  7. I'm brimming over with so much affection for that beautiful yearling, I don't know what to say first. So, I'll start with Happy Birthday to Ramsey and Happy Birth Day to Emma.

Those last few shots of him are breathtaking ...he looks very grown up and calm compared to that little troublemaker who ran like the wind and pestered his Mom last summer.

And Happy Birthday to you, Kris...whenever it is.

AND when the heck did you have time to make jam?

Dear Little Ramsey - Been trying to wish you a Happy Birthday but have had trouble posting - at least in California it is still July 1st!!! You have brought so much joy to my home and yours too. You have a beautiful donkey Mama and a loving and caring human Mom too. You worried her lots, but sounds to me you are running around with 4 good feet now. Wishing you many more

  34. Beautiful donkeys. I will have to find the older post about Emma and Ramsey. I know that donkey people are pretty special.
I don't mean to offend anyone.
But they just are so different. If you know what I mean.
