A Sizable Correction

We celebrated Ramsey's Birthday a couple of days ago and the rest of the country followed suit this weekend.  That is what the 3000-4000 rounds of ammo fired off by all my neighbors on Saturday was about right?  All these gun-happy yahoos weren't really trying to kill me by shooting at the woods Connor and I walk in every day were they?  They were just celebrating Ramsey's birthday right?

That's the story I'm sticking with with because I doubt anyone wants to read my rant about idiots who think that a holiday gives them free rein to get roaring drunk and fire endless rounds of high velocity rifle fire randomly into the woods.  And the F****** cannon....lets just not talk about the F****** cannon.

Instead of me ranting about the difference between having the right to bear arms vs. the right to enjoy a walk in the woods without having to worry about getting shot by some irresponsible moron, I need to address a small typo in Ramsey's birthday post, which Mel noticed right off:

"48 inches, wow! I have had them pictured in my mind at 44 or 45 inches!!
Happy birthday big guy!"

Actually Mel, you are dead on.  A perfect bulls-eye!

This Spring, Ramsey has grown a lot and is now taller than his mom....

He measures exactly 45 inches:).  (look at where the tape is bent, not my thumb)

While Emma is still 44 inches.  Emma has gotten (ahem, cough, cough) quite a lot wider, but has stayed 44 inches tall for the last few years.  She will be tuning five years old in just a few weeks so I think she is done growing (Please God, help me keep her from growing any wider - we need all the help we can get).

I asked Ramsey if he was upset about being so abruptly shortened....

"Of course not.  I am the absolute, most perfect size.  I was the perfect size before you screwed up and told everybody I was a giant and I"m still the perfect size now."

"Well, what about all those other donkeys out in the world who are smaller or bigger than you?"

"You humans are so silly Ma.  Who cares what the stupid tape measure says, they're donkeys, they're ALL the perfect size.  Well, OK, maybe not quite as perfect as me, but then, who could be?"

Thank you for all the lovely birthday wishes for Ramsey and for continuing to follow us on this journey.  I struggle sometimes to find the words and drive to keep this blog going.  Each of you reading this right now is the reason why I still do.  Thank you for it.

  1. I'm glad you keep writing. :)

Heh, as the saying goes, "Your rights end where my rights begin." I'm glad we have such strict gun and hunting laws Downunder. I never need to risk a bullet hole when I walk in our bushland!

  2. You're blog is part of my early morning routine. I do so admire how you tackle life's ups and downs. Emma and Ramsey are two lucky donkeys. Are there poisonous snakes in upper New York?

    1. Not really. There are timber rattlers, but they are very rare here (and becoming rarer) and elusive. I have only ever found one and it disappeared as fast as it could when it saw me. There are plenty of small, non-venomous snakes, but they don't bother me.

  3. I love your blog and while I completely know and understand how much work it takes to keep it going, you are not allowed to stop! ;-)

  4. The best entries are, of course, when you write, but I know it takes a chunk of time out of your day. I also love entries that are purely photographs--don't feel you're shortchanging anyone!

    1. I think you may have misspelled BESS (aka BESS!!) ;) but do agree that she needs her own blog. Incidentally, if "it's all about BESS," should we be feeling sorry for Kate?

  6. Well, Yahoos all around I guess. Here I thought you would enjoy your fourth of July in the quiet solitude of your woods while I was kept up until 2:00 am with what sounded like the streets of Bahdhad. And for the record, Addie wouldn't make a good gun dog.

  8. I agree, all donkeys are the perfect size. How could they not be? They're donkeys, therefore most everything about them is perfect. :)

  9. The metal ruler, every time I try to use it on my donkeys, they disappear! I commend you! :-)

    1. They do hate the metal ruler. I actually had to tie them up to measure them. I think it is the only object I've ever seen Ramsey shy from. I wonder if it makes a noise we can't hear when it vibrates. Of course, a few treats convinced them to hold still for a few seconds of torture:)

  10. I am so glad I live where there were no fireworks to frighten the animals. Your donkeys are so beautiful and healthy. Msny more years for them I am sure!

  11. what's a few inches among friends? People ask me all the time how tall Irish is (and now Carmen) I always answer: the perfect height for me.

  12. While I understand the pressures of writing a blog (and I could never do it myself), I will really miss yours if you decide to stop. I have learned so much from you as you have dealt with Ramsey's hoof, as you have educated us about equine nutrition, and as you described (with illustrations) your job. I would miss you terribly. I hope you can find it within you to continue.

  13. I am very sorry you had to endure the firearms barrage. Not only horrible to listen to, but so very dangerous. My dog, Tessa is so traumatized by the fireworks that go off. So many bad things happen to pets because people have to see 15 to 20 minutes of fireworks. I have come to dread the 4th of July and New Years Eve. I don't blame you for wanting to rant. I hope you and your friend Farm Buddy and all the animals are ok. I think Emma is such a beautiful girl. I cannot see her girth so we ladies try and hide it with Spandex! She looks like a Supermodel!

  14. I loved the Responsibility Training information. Love reading about your farm. Keep it up, please.

  15. The firearms are just plain stupid and they must have $$$ to fire off rounds as ammo is expensive.
That said, I think most of my donks are in the 52 inch kind of size. I guess I only worry about Eddie and Princess as I still intend to put saddles on them. I think Princess may be 52? No matter, your donkeys are perfect.
