I haven't had time to write any blog posts, but for anyone interested, this is the only published data I have been able to find about vaccinating horses for Lyme disease. The second link refers to a study that is occurring right now and will end in September 2015. Pretty slim pickings:

Emma has decided that she is NOT going to eat her medicine. Molasses is gross and sticky. Apple sauce is a plot by Satan to destroy all that is good and wholesome in the world. Apple flavoring is just plain wrong and don't even think about ruining carrots with those nasty, evil little pills. I think we are going to have to use the dreaded syringe.
She gave me quite a scare on Saturday when she didn't want to eat anything after just one day of medicine. I talked her out of a complete hunger strike with some hay pellets, a little walk and a whole bale of hay out on my snowblower path - the lure of forbidden territory. This morning, Ramsey gave his food dish a very skeptical look.
It's going to be a very long month.
Poor donkeys... If they even refuse molasses, they must feel terrible...
ReplyDeleteOh wow. It was easy for me to give Morris his meds but I'm not sure how easy it will be for an equine...how about strawberry flavored yogurt mixed with the medicine? My equine love yogurt ... just a thought.
ReplyDeleteNothing that is important is ever easy with animals, is it? :( I hope you figure out a way to get them their pills without having to resort to the needle.
ReplyDeletehang in there. I've had luck hiding medication in an alfalfa or beet pulp mash with molasses.
ReplyDeleteUgh :-(
ReplyDeleteYeah, I have access to most of the veterinary journals through my university and I spent a little bit of time searching and scanning and the only thing I could come up with in horses is the Cornell study (http://www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/pii/S0264410X99001875)...and only 12 horses:(:(:(
ReplyDeleteA couple months ago I was doing some reading about lyme in dogs and there isn't really all that much more out there for them either...the struggle.
Good luck...
What a pain in the butt! Let's hope it all works out one way or the other.
ReplyDeleteI am so sorry to hear that Emma won't make it easier for herself and you. I've been following along with great interest, but feel so helpless because I've only had experience with dogs and cats. I just wanted you to know that I am thinking of you and hoping that things progress on a more positive note.
ReplyDeleteWarm Regards, Lisa in Oregon
