I hate being right

I've had the feeling for the past couple of months that something isn't quite right with my beloved long ears.  It's not something I could easily put my finger on, just a bunch of little things that are off.  It's Emma not wanting to be scratched or petted.  It's the rash she got that turned into a staph infection.  It's the way she turned back into her lovable, huggable self two days after I started her on antibiotics. It's Ramsey shifting his weight off his good foot or stomping at flies that don't exist.  Ramsey acting grumpy.  Ramsey is many things; he's bratty, pushy, spoiled, charming, huggable, lovable, nosey, but never grumpy.  I knew there was something wrong.

When the vet was here last week I had her test them for Lyme disease.  The results came back today.  Emma is off-the-charts positive and Ramsey just a little less so.  I knew what she was going to say as soon as the phone rang.  I really, really hate being right.

We'll begin treatment just as soon as we figure out what the best option is for donkeys.

  2. After yesterday's post about your wonderful success with Ramsey's formerly bad and still tricky foot, this feels like a bucket of ice being emptied over one's head. I'm so sorry you are having to deal with this nasty disease now. Poor you, the three of you! However, you are so knowledgeable and resourceful, no doubt in my mind that you will be successful in treating, and curing, your sweet longears. I hope you protect yourself well against this nastiness!?! Sending a mountain of anti-tick and anti-Lyme (and anti-meningo-encephalitis?) vibes your way! Best wishes!

  3. oh dear! Glad that you trusted your instincts. I just treated my BC for lymes this fall. I am thinking it's a course of antibiotics?

  5. I am so sorry to hear this news. If anyone can beat this, you can. Is there anything you can do as a preventative for Tessa and Conner?

  6. Now you got me scared. I never realized donkeys can get Lyme disease... (we live in a forest with a lot of ticks in summer)
I hope your vet will find adequate antibiotics !!

  8. Oh my! That is awful news! I hope there is a treatment that will bring them relief and won't empty your bank account at the same time. :(

    1. I get tested every year and, so far, the tests come back negative. Lyme and anaplasmosis are epidemic here now.

  11. Oh my gosh, I'm so very sorry. Could Tanner have had it too? I'm just stunned, I would never have suspected it.

    1. It's one of the first things we checked for when Tanner got sick as Lyme can cause kidney failure, but he tested negative.

  13. Did the doc give a name to the problem? I know mites and issues with skin. I've had it happened and treated with ivermectrin and iodine scrubs when the weather was cold. I understand a staph infection is serious so antibiotics would be in order.

  15. No!
Was going to ask what the normal course of action is, but see from previous posts it appears to be antibiotics.
Sending your babies all positive and healing vibes.

  19. I'm so glad you are on the ball! I had the damnable thing for over ten years before we even heard it might be a possibility down here in Oz (where many doctors still say it doesn't exist) and by the time I started treatment my body was well wrecked. I'm improving slowly, but not sure I'll ever be what I was. Prompt treatment is the go for sure!

  20. Oh, good gravy. What next?! Good that a diagnosis could be reached. So many times illnesses remain mysterious despite tests. You have to test for the right thing....... I"m sure you'll be on top of it in no time, but who needs the headache and worry! Sorry..... good luck!
