Little White Grubs

Bessie started having her puppies yesterday afternoon and finished around midnight with 8 wriggly, squirmy, little white grubs.

They don't look like much at this point - newborn puppies always look a bit more like slugs than anything else - but these little grubs will grow up to be super farm guardians just like mom.

While none of us approve of indiscriminate breeding, there is a real place in the world for outstanding dogs who do very important work.  Just as Bess has proven herself to be an exceptional and invaluable farm dog, she is, of course, proving to be an exceptional mom.

These pups will grow up with sheep, cattle, chickens, pigs, tractors and a whole pack of outstanding farm dogs to teach them their jobs.  If that isn't enough, Uncle Connor will be there every day to show them how to have fun.

  3. Oh wow! Look at those pups! They are so precious. I have had pups once from a hound dog in the house. The pups were orphaned and I bottle fed them and was the mom. That is very hard work.
I hope Uncle Connor knows how much work he has cut out for him!

  5. Thank you for the overload of sweet pictures this morning. Uncle Connor will do a great job showing them how to play. Momma will teach them how to do their job and protect the creatures under their care.

  9. They are beautiful little snowballs! Nice going momma Bess. They have some big "paws" to fill to be great working dogs around the farm. But with Mom to teach them the rules and Uncle Connor to teach them fun, they'll have it made! Good luck to them all and welcome to the world.

  12. So happy that all look fat and healthy. Just a tip (having bred and showed Irish Setters for many years), used to use different colors of rick rack as collars for each puppy (just kept changing them as puppies grew). Made it easy to keep track of each individual puppy and monitor their gaining weight or if one started to lag behind the others. Most of all, have fun!!

  14. Gorgeous scenes of mama and baby. Yes there will always be a place for well bred dogs. Why give up generations of careful selection for certain skills that allow them, and us, to fit them so well into their roles? (Tina from Oz here!)
