The short answer is that Ramsey had a hoof abscess in the Fall and the infection got into the bone in his foot. At a near-death moment, we made an emergency trip to Cornell. He had surgery on his foot and spent 13 days there. He is still in recovery now, but is doing well. If you would like to read the whole story, you can find all of it in my archive starting here I think:
Horses come into heat about one week after giving birth regardless of nursing. Donkey are, of course, a little bit different, but still similar. They may come into heat within weeks or months of birth. The first time Emma came into heat after Ramsey's birth was the weekend that we made out emergency trip to Cornell. I do not know if the sudden separation and lack of nursing triggered it or if she would have come in anyway.
Emma is not making much milk, but Ramsey still gets the occasional drink. He would like it to be much more, but he has to settle for what he can get:)
He's almost as tall as she is now!
ReplyDeleteAww, so sweet what lovely photos. I'm a fairly new follower on your blog, and see that Ramsey has had hoof probs, but wondered how this happened?

Will Ramsey nurse while Emma's in season? I guess I thought that nursing would prevent her from going into season. Such a lot to learn....
