Getting Ready for Winter

"Now what's Ma up to?  Do you suppose we'll get a chance to eat some of that...."

"You know, I do think Ma has lost her mind..."

"Yeah, and I bet cutting, chopping and hauling all that stuff is going to cut into our hiking time even more.  What is she thinking?"

"All that work just so she can burn the stuff come winter.  Ma really ought to learn how to grow a good coat and eat hay to keep warm, it's sooo much easier.  Good thing firewood is her job not ours.  Let's leave her to it, this sure looks like a job we should stay far away from, even if it would be fun to nibble on."

Moby's Big Adventure

Many of you may recall Moby, Farm Buddy's painted turtle who, after much debate, we determined to be Mr. Moby.  Well, FB has agonized for many years now whether to release Moby back out into the world.  We were never sure if he would be able to survive on his own, but after hearing about all of the painted turtles who have taken up residence in my pond and who are so obviously thriving, she has decided to turn him loose here.

The turtles are doing so well in fact that it has become standing-room-only on the straw bale they use to sun themselves....

They are not easy to photograph as they are shy and dive into the water as soon as they see me, but I have actually seen them sitting stacked up in a pile.  To alleviate the congestion, I put a board out for them to climb on...

Obviously, life is good for painted turtles in my sheltered pond.  What better place for Moby to go out and join the world...

We showed him around...

and set him loose to make his way in the world.  He took one look around and disappeared into the depths.

I have seen a Moby-sized turtle sunning on the plank several times in the past couple of days.  hopefully he is enjoying himself and finding plenty to eat.  Good luck Moby.

A Farm in May

There are several new arrivals at the farm.  This little fellow joined the world this morning ...

and promptly got castrated this afternoon while he is still small enough to get our hands on.  The calves are a bit late this year as the bull was a bit late last year.

Still, he got the job done....

and mom is proud.  Her name is Queen Anne's Lace, aka The Queen...

Yesterday morning brought this young lass into the world...

Not the greatest picture, but this is a first lamb for her mom, Dora, and she is a bit nervous yet.

The rest of the ewes are all due starting this week as well.  Anyone want to hazard a guess as to when these balloons will burst....?

The self-propelled rototillers have been hard at work....

....and have done a good job of tilling the garden....

They now have a new area to work in.  They go in and out of the barn via the ramp.

This young lady has taken up residence as well in order to provide milk for the pigs, chickens and to satisfy Farm buddy's dairy addiction.  Her name is Calamity so, of course, we shall call her Jane.  It suits her.

Lots going on on the farm, giving the busy-bodies plenty to gossip over during dinner...

and while lounging around at the spa.
